Swift, West round 2

*Opinion*

I figured Sunday night (9/12/10) would be a great matchup. You had the Dallas Cowboys against the Washington Redskins. A conference game usually calls for an exciting battle.

Little did I know, the VMAs had a rivalry matchup too. Though it wasn’t as classic as the Cowboy-Redskin showdown, adorable and very talented Taylor Swift up against hip hop genius Kanye West seemed to have made a comeback. There was so much attention drawn to the Kanye West/Taylor Swift mishap when Kanye basically snatched the mic from her during her acceptance speech and said he thought Beyoncé should have won instead. But seriously, did MTV really need to do this? Did we really need to revisit this?

After last year’s controversial situation, I was hoping this year something new and spicier would happen. I can’t believe they made that situation linger by letting Taylor sing a song about it and allow Kanye’s selfish ass to be the final performance.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Kanye’s music, but we all know he never holds back when he has something on his mind and it isn’t always a good thing. Entertaining, sure. But the VMAs basically made it look like it wasn’t wrong that he completely interrupted Taylor’s spotlight last year, and to top that off he got the ultimate spotlight by ending the VMAs this year.  But seriously why did they continue on with this Swift/West drama?!

In the article http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1647786/20100913/west_kanye.jhtml, Kanye’s lyrics during his performance were as follows: “I always find, yeah, I always find something wrong/ You been putting up with my sh– just way too long/ I’m so gifted at finding what I don’t like the most/ So I think it’s time for us to have a toast. Let’s have a toast for the douche bags!/ Let’s have a toast for the a–holes!/ Let’s have a toast for the scumbags!” The song was titled “Runaway.”

The song was clever and alluded that maybe he was bashing himself and that was his way of apologizing further. Perhaps both their performances were in some way about forgiveness. Taylor sang “You’re still an innocent.”  But why couldn’t they just let it go? Was MTV that afraid nothing more exciting would happen during the VMAs?

When Taylor started her performance with the video clip of Kanye stealing her spotlight last year, I seriously thought he was going to randomly join her while she was performing and they were going to do some awesome performance to give us something new to talk about. That would have been a clever way to put the beef between them on the backburner. They could have sang “Why can’t we be friends.” That would have been a great way for MTV to end the show, have them collaborate instead of sing separately about what happened and drag out out-dated drama.

Did they not have a better idea to end it? I mean come on, they could have ended it with the Jersey Shore cast and Chelsea Handler drinking, humping and fist pumping  to house music. Tasteful, no. Entertaining, sure. That show is the best thing MTV has on now anyway. (Since The Hills and The City ended that is).

Or they could have ended it with another great performer who isn’t an asshole and plays music all can enjoy. Justin Bieber. Seriously.
